24 Sep How to Get Perfect Teeth Without Braces
Add a healthy, beautiful smile to your list of New Year’s resolutions with a little help from.
1. Two is the Magic Number
As we eat and drink during the day, plaque builds up around our teeth and gums. Brushing twice a day (morning and night) helps to remove plaque and the bacteria that causes dental decay and gum disease. Don’t skip brushing before bed, as teeth are more vulnerable to decay while we sleep due to reduced saliva production.
2. Start Flossing
Unfortunately, your trusty toothbrush does not remove all of the plaque between your teeth. Flossing once daily removes more plaque between teeth and reduces the risk of tooth decay and gum inflammation in these areas. Not sure how to floss effectively? Ask your dentist to demonstrate at your next visit.
3. Be Wary of Acidic Food and Drinks
Acidic food and drinks such as citrus fruits and carbonated beverages that have a pH below 5.5 can cause loss of tooth structure by erosion. Avoid brushing immediately after consumption; instead, rinse with water or mouthwash to minimise the detrimental effects.
4. Enhance Your Smile
Speak to your dentist if you are concerned about the colour, shape or position of your teeth. There are several options available to obtain a more beautiful smile once your teeth and gums are healthy and stable. Simple stain removal, whitening or clear braces could help you reach your smile goals.
5. Be Snack Wise
If you must snack, choose wisely. Many food and drinks that we consider healthy such as cereal bars, dried fruits and sports drinks actually contain large amounts of sugars and may be highly acidic. Consider teeth-friendly snacks such as cheese, nuts, milk and water as an alternative.
